Berlin international
Are you working in Berlin’s music industry or are you a musician based in Berlin? Want to network and travel? Then apply now for the Music Ambassador programme.
The Music Ambassador programme by the Berlin Music Commission has existed for eleven years and will once again be announced in a new funding round in 2025. Through a continuation of the cooperation with Musicboard Berlin, this call can expand the program’s target group: Berlin musicians from the pop culture sector can apply for the program in addition to Berlin music business professionals. Applications are also open to teams of musicians and music professionals.
The Music Ambassador Program is aimed at Berlin-based music business professionals and musicians who want to represent Berlin abroad and build sustainable networks. The focus is on the international networking of the participants and the presentation of Berlin’s broad musical spectrum worldwide. In particular, the program will support projects that foster the coordinated transfer of knowledge and experience between the various music locations and that promote sustainable networking. New artistic or professional collaborations should lead to the development or strengthening of networks from all over the world to and with Berlin.
The Berlin Music Commission and Musicboard Berlin want to make the program as accessible as possible for the entire music value chain (professionals and musicians) and reflect the diversity of Berlin’s music industry and scene. If you have further questions regarding the accessibility of the program, please contact musicambassador[at]berlin-music-commission.de (Tim Joppien).
Apply till May 20! We are looking forward to your submissions.
The target group
The programme is aimed at all active participants in the Berlin music scene – from artists setting up creative or business cooperation projects to professional music industry players such as labels, publishers, booking agencies and management. Applicants must have their registered office or place of residence in Berlin.
The Music Ambassador Programme promotes the international networking of Berlin’s music business and musicians and strengthens the internationalisation of the Berlin music scene and the city’s economic standing overall.
Funding is provided for travel projects abroad by Berlin music business professionals and musicians. Network exchange and cooperation between music networks is a key focus. Preference is given to cooperation projects, joint conference projects and delegation trips. Funding can also be provided for trips to explore the market or for artistic and professional collaborations. Activities to initiate and prepare such projects are also eligible for support. Tour-only projects (support or headliner tours) are excluded.
A Music Ambassador is tasked with representing Berlin internationally as a music location and submitting a short report and the results of the trip following their travel.
Application criteria & advice
If a destination is revisited, new criteria and approaches need to be listed in emphasising its sustainable nature. A focus is given to less established, not regularly visited events & markets
Please note that a visa may be required for entry and that country-specific entry requirements apply. We recommend that you check the latest information from the Federal Foreign Office and the relevant immigration authorities or diplomatic missions in the respective country before submitting your application.
Application process
There is no right to a grant towards the costs. The call for applications is subject to the availability of budget funds. The decision is made by a jury of the Board of Trustees of the Berlin Music Commission and by Musicboard Berlin. Members of the jury or employees of the Berlin Music Commission or Musicboard Berlin and their dependents are not eligible for funding.
Schedule / Accounting / Documentation
We publish frequently asked questions and answers about the Music Ambassador project here. If you have any questions, please contact us via email: musicambassador[at]berlin-music-commission.de
Who can submit an application?
Persons involved in music business and pop music scene that are located in Berlin, who live in or have a company based in Berlin.
The legal status of the applicant (for example, natural person, society, or company) is not relevant to the funding decision.
Applicants do not have to be German or EU citizens.
Applicants must be able to submit an invoice.
What do I need to consider when filling out the application?
What destinations can I choose?
We do not make any specifications here, but follow the needs of the Berlin music industry and music scene. However, the focus is on less established events and markets that are not regularly attended.
Please note that a visa may be required for entry and that country-specific entry requirements apply. We recommend that you check the latest information from the Federal Foreign Office and the relevant immigration authorities or diplomatic missions in the respective country before submitting your application.
What is meant with "occasion of the trip"?
Please only enter a short answer here, this will serve as a reminder for the jury and will be included in the agreement as an “occasion” alongside the destination. (e.g. the name of a specific event, initiation or realisation of artistic or professional collaborations, PR/promotion stay, research projects, artist residencies, songwriting/co-creation camps or other reasons for the trip).
What is meant by "initial situation and motivation/goals"?
Why do you want to go there? What motivates you to travel there (economic potential/personal background or recommendations)?
Ask yourself :
What is meant by "establish sustainable networks"?
Your trip should lead to new connections that not only benefit you personally, but from which other people/companies/communities in Berlin could also benefit. Ideally, there will be a return-network to Berlin – this return network is not part of the application – (e.g. establishing contacts in Amsterdam, then organising an event with artists from Amsterdam in Berlin) or clear follow-up activities in the region with other Berlin stakeholders (e.g. establishing contacts in Amsterdam, then organising a tour for several artists in BeNeLux). For us, sustainability means building and maintaining long-term (economic and personal) relationships at eye level.
Ask yourself:
What is meant by "realisation and the expected results"?
Try to describe a concrete plan of your activities. What results will you achieve by travelling and how will you go about it? How do you want your trip to be structured? Who would you like to meet? Have you already planned or arranged specific dates? How can these experiences and contacts help you in the future?
Ask yourself:
What should my cost breakdown look like?
What scope should my application have and what amount can I apply for?
There is no minimum amount; smaller trips can also be supported. We have not set a general upper limit for the amount requested, but the amounts of travel grants awarded so far have generally ranged between 250 and 1,500 euros. The jury decides on the amount.
What is meant by "contribution towards costs"?
The Music Ambassador programme can never cover 100% of the costs incurred. We support projects in which the applicants have a vested interest and are willing to bring their own money (own funds) or have managed to raise other money (third-party funds from sponsors, other public funding bodies, etc.) for the trip.
Please note: The Music Ambassador Programme cannot fund projects that include other Berlin state funds (e.g. your project already receives support from the Berlin Senate of Culture). However, it can be combined with federal funding (e.g. GO! Export from the Initiative Musik).
What kind of expenses can I enter in the cost overview?
What types of costs are not eligible?
Can I temporarily save the application?
When can I settle my travel expenses?
How is the billing process carried out?
The Music Ambassador Program is run on behalf and funded by the Berlin Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Public Enterprises.
As part of a cooperation with Musicboard Berlin, the programme is being opened up to musicians and their professional teams.
