The Archiv der Jugendkulturen – archive for youth cultures – is a nonprofit organization and independent archive. The archive collects sources from different youth- and subcultures and the pop cultural mainstream. The archive includes a broad collection of magazines and fanzines from different scenes, among them around 8.000 punk and hardcore fanzines and extensive collections of fanzines and magazines from other subcultures like techno, metal, gothic, graffiti or hip hop. Music and youth magazines from the mainstream are also part of the collection. All together there are around 50.000 single issues from more than 50 different countries in the archive. In addition to that the archive has large collections of recordings, films, posters and flyers, also artwork and merchandising. Legacys and special collections are also part of the archive, e. g. the collection of the former Berliner Rock- und Poparchiv, the legacy of Ralf Regitz (Planetcom, Loveparade, E-Werk) and the legacy of Axel Thiel (graffiti archive from Kassel).
The organization also runs a public library, does exhibitions, collaborates with universities and other research institutes and is active in the area of political and cultural education.
