On June 5, 2024, the national conference “GENDER EQUALITY NOW – Paths to a gender-equitable music industry” took place at the Silent Green Kulturquartier in Berlin. Organized by Music Women* Germany and in partnership with the Berlin Music Commission, the event brought together experts and interested parties to discuss gender equality in the music industry. After the opening speeches by Claudia Roth (MP), Katja Lucker (Initiative Musik) and representatives of the MW*G board, a 20-point plan on diversity and inclusion was presented. This was followed by discussions on intersectional equal opportunities, support systems for parents in the music industry and abuse of power and sexism in the industry. Another topic was the role of artificial intelligence and its impact on gender equality. The results of the day were summarized and rounded off with a performance by Aka Kelzz. The day ended with a relaxed get-together over drinks and snacks, where participants were able to network further.
The speakers’ and moderators’ intelligent contributions inspired us with their insights and impulses. We took away many important suggestions for our work. We want to be much more self-empowered in the future, dare more, be more active and take on more responsibility. The impressions, contributions and discussions from yesterday will stay with us for a long time to come. The discussions made it clear that real change is possible if we work together.
