Dear members, dear network partners,
Long and irregular working hours, touring, and insecure working conditions – working in the music industry is often difficult to reconcile with family life. Parenthood is still one of the main reasons for inequality in the workplace and often leads to mothers and single parents not holding management positions or changing the industry. In the Music Industry Talk Hour “Family-Friendly Companies – Improving Working Conditions for Parents” on Thursday, 29.09. from 10.00 a.m., Marit Posch and Steffi von Kannemann (Parenthood in Music) talked about how we can make the music industry more family-friendly – and thus also contribute to the attractiveness of jobs.
In the dialogue with the participants, they addressed these topics, among others:
-
- What does “family-friendly company” mean anyway?
-
- Why should companies become more family-friendly, given the shortage of skilled workers?
- What framework conditions does a family-friendly company need?
- What can be implemented in the short term?
- What needs to be implemented in the long term?
- How can we do away with prejudices and stereotypes towards parents?
- How can companies promote women in leadership positions?
This consultation hour took place online via Zoom. Participation was only possible with confirmed registration.
Parenthood In Music is an initiative to improve working conditions for parents in the music industry. It was founded in 2021 by Steffi von Kannemann (founder Better Things) and Marit Posch (General Manager IDOL Germany) in Berlin. With their workshops, keynotes and panels, Marit and Steffi enter into direct exchange with artists, leaders, institutions, festivals and companies to discuss problems, develop innovative working models and thus create a future-oriented working world, also across industries, that supports employees and self-employed cultural workers with children.

SAbout Steffi von Kannemann Steffi von Kannemann is co-founder of the Berlin-based music agency Better Things, where she manages PR campaigns for international artists such as Rosalia, Caroline Polachek, Mø, Aurora, Shout Out Louds, etc. for German-speaking countries. After completing her Master’s degree in Sociology and Political Science, Steffi started organising DIY punk concerts in Berlin in the early 00s, moved to Naples and Barcelona to work for a label. Over the years, the agency specialised in music marketing, PR and event management, organising various events, including the Berlin Midsommar Festival with 5000 visitors. However, as the clients and associated topics became more and more international over the years, the agency renamed itself Better Things in 2020 in the midst of the Corona crisis and expanded its PR roster again enormously.
